Care For The Elderly

Since its inception in 1988, St.Thomas Charitable Trust was active with a mission to care for the most neglected ones in the society. By the Grace of God, we could start a small clinic to give free medical care to the extent possible, with the help of doctors who are church members, during the initial stage.

In 1991, the trust started institutional accommodation for the destitute old people – Shanthibhavan

In 1994, purchased 5 acres of land at Redhills in the outskirts of the Chennai city, nearer to the Golden Quadrilateral NH-5 and started construction. With the good-hearted support of the church members, well-wishers and philanthropists in and around Chennai, we could construct the building for “Shanthibhavan” and the old age home was shifted there.

With the completion of second phase in 1998, separate wings for ladies and gents were made available and by this time the strength increased up to 50. The demand was invariably increasing and we were facing lack of space and infrastructure.

More than two hundred destitute including mentally retarded were looked after by “Shanthibhavan” since its conception. More than a hundred inmates including a respectful priest, passed away peacefully and we are proud to say in the name of God, that all of them had a respected burial than they deserve as a fellow human being.
